Unreal Engine 4.19: Using Material Layers

Features:

  • The Epic team has added support for Material Layers in the latest version of Unreal Engine.
  • All instances of a Get Shared Input node will read the same shader input data, in this case, our global parameters.
  • When editing a Material Instance with a parent Material that contains a Material Attribute Layers node, the Material Instance Editor also contains a Layer Parameterstab.

Apple’s Latest VR Patent Describes a Compact VR Headset with Eye Tracking

Catadioptric optics, commonly used in high magnification optical systems like telescopes and microscopes, ‘fold’ the optical path to create a more compact arrangement.

Microdisplays, which are small but offer high pixel density, are desirable for VR because of their compact size but require lenses with high magnification.

The 2018 Game Developers Conference

Results:

  • Interest in Nintendo Switch development rising, with 1 in 3 developers interested;
  • Most developers’ games sell as well or better on Switch as other consoles;
  • 1 in 10 developers are working on a game that will monetize using “loot boxes”;
  • PC and mobile platforms are the most popular platforms to make games for, but mobile development is slipping.

Intel Launches LA Studio for Volumetric VR & AR Projects

News

  • Intel Studios, the new site, is said to present the world’s largest stage for volumetric video capture;
  • Its 10,000 square-feet dome was designed to capture actors and objects in volumetric 3D, generating high-end holographic content for VR and AR;
  • Intel Studios will work with ad agencies, producers of scripted content and live events producers.
